Lecture Title: “Building Science and Business Value in Platform/Product Biotechnology Companies”

Lecture Summary:
In this lecture, Dr. Steve Kaldor will provide lessons learned from his leadership of two San Diego-based biotechs (Syrrx and Ambrx) plus his Board/SAB roles in various other companies.  In addition, Dr. Kaldor will offer broader thoughts on the current and projected macorenvironment for biotech entrepreneurs.  In particular, he will offer a contrarian view that, despite pundit claims to the contrary, the traditional biotech model is still viable and remains one of the best opportunities for creating shareholder value.

Speaker: Stephen Kaldor, Ph.D.
Dr. Stephen Kaldor was most recently CEO of Ambrx.  Before joining Ambrx in 2007, he served as President and Chief Scientific Officer of Takeda San Diego, Inc.  Prior to this he was President and CSO of Syrrx, Inc., a structure-based drug discovery company, and led Syrrx’s transformation into a research and development operation with multiple clinical-stage product candidates.  His leadership was integral to the positioning of Syrrx for its $270 million acquisition by Takeda in March 2005.  Before Syrrx, he worked in drug R&D management positions at Eli Lilly and Company.  Dr. Kaldor is co-inventor of multiple compounds that have advanced into clinical development, including ViraceptTM, a marketed HIV protease inhibitor.
